WriterCon

a community of writers

WriterCon

WriterCon is a community of writers working together to build skills, exchange knowledge, and achieve dreams. People assume the “Con” is short for “convention” and it’s true that we hold an annual convention over Labor Day weekend. But in my mind, it’s also short for “conclave,” which is the name of a literary magazine my wife and I started publishing in 2015—and means “a private group of people with a shared goal.” That’s WriterCon.

According to locals, when he was seven years old, little Billy Bernhardt was running around Midwest City telling people he was going to be a writer. The problem was—he didn’t know how to make that happen, and neither did anyone else in the vicinity. It worked out okay in the end—my first novel, Primary Justice, was published in 1991 and became a national bestseller. And soon after, I started speaking at private gatherings of aspiring writers to share what I’d learned on my journey. Eventually that developed into WriterCon.

WriterCon Retreat

Small group retreat at The Canebrake Resort.

We will meet for five days with at least 20 hrs of instruction. Those sessions will be filled with critique, interactive discussions of various writing and publishing topics, editing, and much more. You will submit a partial manuscript before the retreat begins so your instructors, William and Lara Bernhardt, will be familiar with your work and ready to offer useful feedback when you arrive. We will also have free time for optional activities and other fun surprises. Best of all, you will meet your new writing family, people with whom you can consult, commiserate, or collaborate long after the retreat ends. Many retreat groups we’ve taught have remained in touch and become close-knit writer families.

Early Bird Registration is Happening Now

At WriterCon each year the schedule is built around one central question: How can we help writers most? We provide knowledge and opportunities designed to push you forward along your writer’s journey. We have three days of breakout sessions, some for newbies, some tailored for multiple-book authors, and most falling in between—meaning they’re useful for everyone. Our breakout sessions cover every aspect of writing, marketing, and publishing. We also provide pitch sessions for those looking for agents or publishers. We have evening roundtable discussions, where you can meet with experts in a less formal setting and get your questions answered. We have longer “MasterClasses,” a first-page panel, private consultations, manuscript reviews (by published authors), Open Mic Night, karaoke,  and much more. VISIT THE WEBSITE TO SEE OUR CURRENT SPEAKER ROSTER!
